{"id":2699,"date":"2017-05-08T14:48:23","date_gmt":"2017-05-08T13:48:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sussex.ac.uk\/english\/dalziel\/?p=2699"},"modified":"2018-08-03T15:55:23","modified_gmt":"2018-08-03T14:55:23","slug":"mental-health-monsters-by-mime-gerrits","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.sussex.ac.uk\/english\/dalziel\/2017\/05\/08\/mental-health-monsters-by-mime-gerrits\/","title":{"rendered":"Mental Health Awareness Week, 2017: My Monsters Inside, by Mime Gerrits"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>To mark Mental Health Awareness Week (8 -14 May 2017) we are showcasing Mime Gerrits&#8217; <em>My Monsters Inside<\/em>, a series that tackles the stigma around mental health.\u00a0Mime is a 16-year-old artist studying at the University of Creative Arts and this series\u00a0was developed in response to the Dalziel Archive as part of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sussex.ac.uk\/english\/dalziel\/2016\/12\/30\/engraved-in-time-re-imagining-the-dalziels-at-the-university-of-the-creative-arts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8216;Engraved in Time: Re-imagining the Dalziels&#8217;<\/a> project, a strand of our public and educational\u00a0programme. Mime was also inspired by the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sussex.ac.uk\/english\/dalziel\/heroes-or-monsters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Heroes or Monsters <\/a>section of our online exhibition &#8216;Alice to Alice: Dalziel 1865 &#8211; 1871.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Below, Mime discusses <em>My Monsters Inside<\/em>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">&#8220;Being one of many who likes to create art from personal emotions, I designed monsters to represent mental illnesses within society today. When I studied the Dalziel Brothers and their sequential <em>Alice in Wonderland<\/em> wood engravings for my project, I decided to design a fantasy world where a girl&#8217;s life problems such as depression, anxiety and anorexia become monsters that she has to defeat in order to be a healthier and happier person.
