Fire Alarm

• If you hear a fire alarm sounding longer than 5 seconds, this means it's a real alarm - please evacuate the building.
• Fire Alarm Tests
  Fire alarm tests are conducted weekly (as required by Health & Safety legislation) on Thursday mornings, co-ordinated by Security. they should only sound for 5-8 seconds. These tests aim to check that the automatic and electronic aspects of the Fire Safety provision on campus are operating properly.

If you detect a fire

• As for any emergency on campus, please call the 24-hour Emergency hotline on x 3333 (external line: 01273 87 3333)
• If the emergency services are required, Security will co-ordinate with the Fire Brigade.
• Only attempt to extinguish the fire it is small and localised
• You can use the Fire Extinguishers provided to help clear your escape route if it is compromised by encroaching flames.

Fire Safety Training

• Two kinds of training sessions: 'Fire Safety' and 'Using a Fire Extinguisher'
  
  Fire Safety training is held in a seminar room and is delivered by Martin Combs,
  
  Using a Fire Extinguisher is delivered to the local Fire Brigade, and includes a theoretical and a hands-on session, under the supervision of a local Fire Brigade trainer.
• Both types of training are relevant and open to all, and can be booked via Sussex Direct: Select 'Personal' tab from the top menu -> 'Staff Development' section. Sussex Direct Login

Fire Wardens

• The School maintains a register of Fire Wardens covering a specific local area (listed below by building)
• See 'Further Information' section below for details of Fire Warden duties, and more.

Reminder:
If you are leading a teaching activity, you are responsible for taking an active role in leading the evacuation from the teaching space, as soon as you hear a fire alarm.

As a reference, in every area of general teaching space there should be fire action notices telling everybody using the space what to do in the event of a fire alarm activation. Please familiarise yourself with these if you're about to lead a session in a space you're not familiar with.

Fire Warden role

• Fire Wardens sweep the area they are responsible for, if an alarm has sounded, to make sure everyone has evacuated from that area, and assist those who may encounter difficulty in evacuating.
• Fire Wardens then join their colleagues in the designated Fire Evacuation area, and compile a name list of those present to check, as far as possible, that all users have escaped from the building.
• Fire Wardens then liaise with the Fire Marshals, who are summoned to the building automatically as part of the Fire Alams system

• Fire Safety Training
  Fire Safety Training is compulsory for Fire Wardens.
  A colleague may only join the official Fire Warden register after having completed training.

• Lone Working
  If lone working is part of your working/studying regime, please book onto Fire Safety training, as Fire Safety provision on campus out-of-hours is much reduced.  Please refer to the University Management of Lone Working Risks Policy.

Fire Drills

• Fire Drills vs Fire Alarm tests
  Fire Alarms tests check that the automated and electronic portion of Fire Safety arrangements are operating fully. Fire Drills check that people do what they need to do, when a fire alarm is sounded.  For this reason, fire drills are conducted unannounced, so that a real life-like response can be witnessed.  Gaps observed during fire drills are addressed, via Health & Safety Co-ordinators and School Management, to make sure the procedures are enacted fully.
• The purpose of Fire Drills
  Even if the Fire Alarms system is in perfect working order, how people respond to the alert is all-important in ensuring everyone's safety. Glitches in the human aspect of Fire Safety response can cost lives, so regular drills are a legal requirement.
• Frequency
  Fire Drills are conducted regularly (once a year for most buildings), as per Health & Safety legislation.

Fire Extinguishers on School territory

• Maintenance
  All Fire extinguishers on campus are serviced, maintained and replaced as part of the University and SEF’s contract with Chubb. Contact Service Centre (aka SEF Helpdesk) on x 7777 or email service.centre@sussexestatesfacilities.co.uk
• New extinguishers
  Additions to the current provision are triggered by a recommendation from the Fire Safety Officer (Martin Combs).  The additions are then included in SEF's next negotiations for renewal of contract with Chubb.
• Locations
  The School is putting together a tracking document of the fire extinguishers within the School territory.
