Registration changes

A number of situations may occur where you need to change the way you are studying.  Generally you should discuss your options with your supervisor in the first instance.

Continuation - I'm writing up my thesis...

If you have completed your research work and are currently writing up your thesis, you can apply to transfer your registration to 'Continuation Status'. You must discuss it with your main Supervisor first.

Extension - Unforeseen circumstances have significantly delayed my progress...

An Extension may be granted allowing you more time to complete your work only under specific circumstances.  E.g. There has been a major failure in your experiment/equipment.  Extensions must be agreed by the Director of Doctoral Studies and will only be granted in exceptional circumstances.  You must plan to complete your Thesis in 3-3.5 years (4.5-5 years p/t) and have the last 9 months (1 year p/t) as a contingency.  Only one extension will be granted and typically just for one term.

IMPORTANT: If you anticipate any difficulty in submitting by your maximum date you must inform the Director of Doctoral Studies for the School at least THREE months before that date to seek advice regarding the possibility of an extension under exceptional circumstances.

Your 'End date' can be found on your Sussex Direct page under "Programme". The 'End date' is normally three years after first registration for MPhil full-time students (four years part time) or four years after first registration for DPhil full-time students (six years part time) If you have had periods of intermission, the 'End date' will have been put back by the same amount of time.

Please ensure that you read the related Procedure which is included with the form - you will need to supply additional information.

Intermission - I need a break from my studies for financial, health, or personal reasons...

You will need to apply for an "Intermission".  First consult your main supervisor who must support your request.  Intermissions are granted for one, two or three terms, depending on the circumstances.  Successive intermissions are not normally granted.  Intermissions must be applied for in advance: it is not usual to grant them retrospectively.  If you need a break of more than a year from your studies, you should withdraw from University and apply for fast track readmission when ready to resume
