Biography

DPhil (Sussex), Msc (London)

Role

  • Reader in International Education
  • Deputy Director, Centre for International Education
  • Convenor, MA International Education (2002/3-2005/6)
  • Chair, Sussex Development Studies Consortium

Research

Pauline's research relates to issues of economics and governance of education in developing countries. Her main research interests include international aid and education; educational policy and practice; costs and financing of education; non-state sector involvement in education; and poverty, child work, gender and education.

Pauline is currently co-investigator on a two-year ESRC-funded research project on non-government public action of basic services in Bangladesh, India and Pakistan, for which she is lead researcher for education. This builds on her related research on non-state provision of basic services, funded by DFID. She has undertaken work on out-of-school children and, as part of the DFID-funded Consortium on Research on Educational Access, Transitions and Equity (CREATE), is currently involved in work on diverse service delivery approaches to increase access for children most likely to be excluded from the formal school system.

Her previous experience includes working on a multi-site, collaborative project with ministries of education and universities in East and Southern Africa on strategic resource planning for achieving education for all goals. Other recent work related to the role of international aid in education includes an analysis of the Education for All Fast-Track Initiative; and exploration of issues related to absorptive capacity in the education sector.

Her work in these different areas has highlighted the importance of greater interaction between educationalists and researchers in development studies - an issue that is clearly apparent from her recent review of research related to education and chronic poverty for the DFID-funded Chronic Poverty Research Centre.

Teaching

Pauline teaches on the MA in International Education, including courses on Education and National Development, Gender, Education and Development, Research and Evaluation for Educational Development, and Management of Planned Change. She also teaches on the MSc in Social Research Methods, International Professional Doctorate in Education, and undergraduate course 'Crossing Time and Nations.'
