Professional development

Researcher Development

As a member of research staff at Sussex, you have full access to our Researcher Development Programme (RDP). The RDP provides year-round training and development opportunities that are designed specifically for researchers (research staff and doctoral researchers). View the programme by activity date and book a place on your preferred training event, or view the entire programme and join the waiting list if we have not yet arranged a date for the session. Examples of training available through the Researcher Development Programme:

  • Research ethics and integrity
  • Getting research funded
  • Public engagement & media skills
  • Preparing a paper for publication

Electronic resources

If time is an issue (and it mostly is), we have also been working on a set of e-learning resources for researchers that can be accessed through Study Direct. These resources are written by Sussex researchers with experience in the relevant areas, and you can access them at any time with any device that connects to the internet. Examples of electronic resources:

  • Getting your book published
  • Effective communication
  • Better presentations
  • Writing an article

Staff Development Unit (SDU)

Further opportunities for development are provided by the Staff Development Unit (SDU). The SDU provides training and development opportunities for all staff at Sussex. Examples of provision from the SDU:

  • Negotiating skills
  • Getting the most from people: leadership and motivation
  • Mastering the art of influence
  • Taking control of your time

IT training

In addition to providing IT advice and support for researchers, IT Services (ITS) also run a full programme of training sessions that range from introductory to advanced level. Examples of training that may be relevant for research staff:

  • Excel analysing data & pivot tables
  • Audiovisual training for lecture theatres and training rooms
  • Building quizzes in Study Direct (the Sussex Moodle-based VLE)
  • Using teaching pages in Sussex Direct
