The Undergraduate Cultural Studies programme at Sussex offers an exciting chance to study culture in all its forms: from opera to soap opera; in settings worldwide, from the UK and Europe to China and Africa; and in different historical periods, from the Ming dynasty to the present. Studying cultures alongside another subject offers a second set of knowledge and skills and potential openings to take into the workplace.
Cultural Studies can be taken as part of a joint degree in one of the following combinations:
As part of a joint degree
- Anthropology and Cultural Studies
- Art History and Cultural Studies
- Drama Studies and Cultural Studies
- English and Cultural Studies
- International Relations and Cultural Studies
- Media Studies and Cultural Studies
- European Languages and Cultural Studies
- Music and Cultural Studies
- Philosophy and Cultural Studies
- Sociology and Cultural Studies
Students taking Cultural Studies as part of a joint degree will take two courses from the Cultural Studies programme each term in the first two years, and one course in their third year. For more details of the Cultural Studies degree programme, click here.
Cultural Studies as an Elective
In addition to the joint degrees outlined above, Cultural Studies may be taken as an elective within a single honours degree, such as the BA Anthropology or the BA History. Within these degrees, students can choose courses from a range of programmes - including Cultural Studies. These courses run alongside those from their major degree programme.
Language options
Once they have enrolled at Sussex, students taking joint degree programmes have the option of substituting one of their Cultural Studies courses for one language course per term.
