The Centre's new MA in Opera and Music Theatre began in Autumn 2007. The course offers both creative practice-based and theory-based pathways. The practice-based route offers musicians (e.g. composers, instrumentalists, vocalists, digital sound artists) and theatre artists (writers, directors, performers, multi-media theatre artists) the opportunity to extend and refine their skills as creative performance and theatre artists working with music, investigating expanded fields of musical production and performance in the context of interdisciplinary historical, critical and theoretical reflection on the current practices of opera, music theatre and other forms of musical multi-media performance work. The theory-based route will be for people interested in historical and theoretical study of opera and music theatre, or people who are interested in professional dramaturgy or criticism.
The course is also part of a range of collaborative activities between CROMT and Glyndebourne Opera, only six miles from the University of Sussex. Glyndebourne will offer students on the course opportunities for engagement with the artistic and professional activities, expertise and facilities of a major international opera company. Glyndebourne also runs a wide-ranging programme of events and activities outside the main opera performances from which students will also be able to benefit.
"The innovative MA in Opera and Music Theatre offers an unmatched opportunity for postgraduate study of opera and contemporary music theatre in the UK. There is now an urgent need of a postgraduate course that sets a new agenda and provides a basis for more advanced study and a springboard for new work. The proposed MA is an overdue development that will make a substantial contribution to contemporarary opera and music theatre." Professor Anthony Hozier, Vice-Principal, Rose Bruford College, London.
