Council on Anthropology & Reproduction Book Prize: Deadline July 1, 2018
The Council on Anthropology & Reproduction (CAR) is pleased to invite nominations for its 2018 CAR Book Prize. This prize seeks to recognize and celebrate edited volumes and monographs that address human reproduction, pregnancy, antenatal care, reproductive technologies, population policy, birth control, contraception, genetics, childbirth, adoption, parenting and other anthropologically-studied reproduction themes.
Note: Previously, the prize was dedicated to edited volumes only. CAR will preserve its dedication to edited volumes, which helped establish and foment topics of reproduction as central fields of anthropological inquiry. Beginning in 2018, however, the prize will be awarded for edited volumes in even numbered years, and monographs in odd numbered years.
Entries for 2018 must be edited volumes with copyright dates of 2016 or 2017. They will be evaluated on:
- Coherence of the volume as a whole
- Ethnographic richness
- Analytic depth
- Contribution to the anthropology of reproduction
- Usefulness for academic teaching and/or advocacy work
Nomination Procedure: Authors, publishers, scholars and advocates may nominate a book with a letter of nomination to the Chair of the CAR Book Prize committee, Susan Erikson, at slerikson@gmail.com by July 1, 2018. In addition, please instruct the publisher to contact the chair and 2 committee members for instructions about where to send the nominated book in hard or electronic copies (slerikson@gmail.com; mounia.elkotni@gmail.com; and as5444@cumc.columbia.edu). Nominations must be received by July 1, 2018; books must be received by committee members from the publishers no later than August 1, 2018 to be considered for the 2018 prize.
The 2018 CAR Book Prize winner will be announced at the CAR and SMA business meetings at the American Anthropological Association meetings in November 2018. To view past book prize winners, please click here to visit their website.
