Welcome to the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry brings together the disciplines of Chemistry and Molecular Bioscience in a single multidisciplinary department with an emphasis on understanding molecules in both a Chemical and Biological context. We are committed to excellence in teaching and research and to multidisciplinary study. Never before have there been such opportunities to apply state of the art techniques to answer fundamental chemical and biological questions. The department has excellent facilities for microscopy, proteomics, genomics, mass spectroscopy, NMR and X-ray crystallography.

The department is arranged in two divisions:

Chemistry
Biochemistry & Biomedical Science

Undergraduate Programs

In May this year Chemistry at Sussex came top of the good university guide and our Bioscience programmes came 12th. We offer five degree programs spanning the Chemical and Biomedical Sciences. A four year M.Chem programme and five BSc programmes including: Chemistry, Chemistry with Forensic Science, Biochemistry and Molecular genetics. The Molecular Medicine programme is particularly popular, with over 70 per cent of this year's graduates opting to apply for entry into Medical School and successfully gaining places. Programmes are also available as four year degrees with a year spent in industry, see links below for further details.

please refer to the Undergraduate prospectus for Chemistry and Biochemistry and Biomedical Science programmes.

Postgraduate programs

The department currently has some 60 graduate students registered for higher research degrees and admits some 30-35 MSc students annually. Refer to the School of Life Sciences website or the Postgraduate prospectus for further information.
