Biography
LYS DREWETT, B.Sc., Dip.AD., P.G.C.E.
Post: Associate Tutor, Ceramic petrology, Archaeological Illustration
EDUCATIONAL AND PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND
Originally trained in Fine Art and in art teaching I first taught art and ceramics. From 1971-74 I worked as a freelance archaeological illustrator with the Inspectorate of Ancient Monuments, Department of the Environment. In 1974 I joined the Sussex Archaeological Field Unit as Illustrations Officer producing object drawings for several hundred excavations in Sussex and elsewhere. From 1981 - 1992 I was Visiting Lecturer in Archaeological Illustration at the Institute of Archaeology, University College London. During this period I became more interested in the technology, and particularly the petrological side, of ceramics. To this end I competed a B.Sc. in Earth Sciences. I have been an Associate Tutor at CCE for some twenty years initially teaching archaeological illustration but more recently the archaeology of pottery.
Research
My main area of research interest is the archaeology of pottery. I currently run the Sussex Archaeological Ceramic Type Series/Thin Section Project based in the SACTS Project Laboratory in the Sussex Archaeological Society's Museum of Sussex Archaeology, Barbican House, Lewes. The aim of this project is to assemble a reference collection of sherds with associated thin-sections and petrological analysis representing a comprehensive sequence of recognised types/fabrics from the Neolithic to the present day in Sussex. In addition I am studying the petrology of prehistoric Caribbean ceramics and am currently working on collections from Barbados, the British Virgin Islands and Trinidad and Tobago.
