The Russian word 'slava' can roughly be translated as 'glory'. From Mikhail Glinka (1804-1857) to Dmitry Shostakovich (1906-1975), Russian music experienced a period of remarkably fertile growth and development. We will continue to examine the work of important Russian composers during this period, tracing the historical and sometimes the political background to their music. This course does not require specialist musical knowledge; just an interest in listening to music and finding out more about its contexts.
