How can I develop my skills?

Across the university, there are many projects and sessions that will develop your skills. The Careers and Employability Centre runs careers fairs, recruitment events and employability workshops. Many of these are presented by employers.

Within Sussex, we run the Learning to Lead Programme . We work closely with the Students' Union, who run volunteering through Project V. Please refer to our Careers website for more details of how to be a volunteer while you study. Keep your eyes open for other projects - there are over many extra-curricular activities you can get involved with at Sussex.

If you would like to read more about how to develop your skills and what graduate employers are looking for, refer to the Destinations website.

This is a list of some of the activities in which you can get involved on campus. Do let us know of others, and we can add these. Please also email us if any of the information is out of date.

Junior Research Associates

The University of Sussex is offering 26 Junior Research Associate (JRA) bursaries over the summer vacation, worth up to £1,800 each. The purpose of these bursaries is to provide an opportunity for talented and ambitious undergraduates to participate in original research with staff and other members of the University.

For more information refer to Funding.

Residential Advisers

Residential Advisers are undergraduate or postgraduate students that help first years settle into life in university accommodation. They are the first port of call for any problems that may occur whilst living in residences.

For more information refer to the Residential Services website.

Work Experience (on campus)

Please contact your department for information on Work Experience schemes they may run.

USSU Activities Committees

Decisions about USSU Activities are overseen by the Activities Committee which, amongst other things, makes decisions about club and society funding applications. It consists of sabbatical officers and club/society reps.

For more information refer to the USSU website.

Project V

Project V is the 'Student Community Action' scheme at the University of Sussex. We offer students the opportunity to volunteer in a wide variety of community projects in Brighton, Hove and Lewes. Our aim is to provide safe and supported volunteering opportunities that benefit both students and the wider local community.

For more information refer to the Project V website.

Student Representative Scheme

Reps are elected through the online voting system run by USSU to represent their school and/or department needs for a year (which runs from November to end of October.) Reps provide an essential link between students, the University and the Students' Union. Because Reps are themselves students, fellow students are happy to seek assistance from them when they have concerns or opinions about their education and experience at University. By keeping the student view on the agenda, Reps are a vital link between students and staff of the University and will help ensure that the University is student driven.

For more information refer to the Student Representative website.

Student Mentoring Scheme

Student mentors (also known as peer mentors) are available for advice and support in most Schools of Study (see School websites for contact details). Students are advised to go along prepared to see a mentor. This could mean bringing questions that have arisen from reading a text, a proposed essay plan, interpreting feedback from a tutor, preparatory work for a presentation, concerns around what constitutes plagiarism etc.

For more information refer to the Academic Office website.

USSU Societies

You can join societies online at www.sussexstudent.com or at USSU Reception, Falmer House. The membership fee (if there is one) goes directly to the society to contribute towards their events and activities.

For more information refer to the USSU website.

Advice & Representation Centre (Students’ Union)

The Advice & Representation Centre (Students’ Union) can give you free, independent and confidential information, advice and support on a range of academic and non-academic issues. We have professional advisers and elected student representatives and the service is completely confidential, independent from the University and no issue is too big or too small for us to deal with.

For more information refer to the USSU website.

USSU Sport

Whether outdoor or indoor, team or individual, students at Sussex benefit from being able to get involved in a wide range of competitive and leisure activities provided by the Union and the University. This section should give you an idea of the broad and diverse nature of sport at Sussex, with something for everyone, regardless of experience.

For more information refer to the USSU website.

Mobil 1

Formula Student is the European equivalent of Formula SAE in the USA. Run by the IMechE in partnership with the SAE, it is primarily about designing and manufacturing a prototype single seater racing car for a fictitious manufacturing firm, to be raced at Silverstone against other competing student teams from across the world.

For more information refer to the Mobile 1 website.

Sussex Wildlife Trust

The partnership between staff and volunteers is fundamental to the work of the Sussex Wildlife Trust. To remain at the forefront of Sussex conservation and achieve our many targets, volunteer input is essential. Volunteers make a considerable contribution to our success, doubling the amount of work that we accomplish. The enthusiasm, commitment, experience and skills that volunteers contribute make them one of our most valuable resources.

For more information refer to the Sussex Wildlife Trust website.

University Radio Falmer

URF broadcasts locally on 1431AM, and online from www.urfonline.com. The station has a packed daytime schedule, and during the evening offers a diverse range of genre programming, all from Sussex students.
