Work shadowing for foundation and 1st years

Applications for work shadowing are now open.

What is work shadowing and why should I do it?

Work shadowing is a great opportunity to gain work experience in a career area which interests you. Whether it changes your thinking or confirms the path you would like to take, it is a good addition to your CV. Short term opportunities can also open doors with companies and lead to longer-term opportunities in the future.

How do I apply and what is funded?

Applications are made using a CV and cover letter, and a link to new opportunities will be advertised here from October 2019. The University will reimburse reasonable travel expenses.

How long is the commitment?

All the work-shadowing opportunities which we source are two days long and exclusively for foundation and first-year students. A majority of those opportunities are in Brighton and the South East but we can also support you in arranging your own if you have a company in mind.

Want to find out more?

Have a look at student feedback from previous years to find out how it has benefitted others and view the FAQs below. If you would like to discuss the benefits of work shadowing in more detail then submit a question online or book an appointment with a Careers Consultant.

NB: programme details are accurate for the 2019/20 academic year but subject to change in subsequent years.

When do the opportunities start and end?

The opportunities can take place at any time during the academic year. This means that it can be convenient for both the provider and you. Once you have accepted an offer from a provider it is up to you to agree on dates with them.

Can I undertake more than one opportunity?

It may be possible for you to do more than one work-shadowing opportunity. Please email internships@sussex.ac.uk.

Who can apply?

These work-shadowing opportunities are open to eligible foundation and first-year students only. For full eligibility details, please see www.sussex.ac.uk/careers/services/createyourfuture.

I can't find what I'm looking for. Can I organise my own work-shadowing opportunity?

It is possible to arrange your own work-shadowing opportunity, subject to approval by the Careers and Employability Centre. We can support you to find your own work-shadowing employers, whom you can then approach directly.

Book an appointment with a Careers Consultant to talk this through.
