The Mason Hayes work experience programme - open to foundation, first and second-year First-Generation Scholars in the School of Law, Politics and Sociology - provides an opportunity for students to spend up to 3 days with an organisation, gaining structured work experience. The opportunities take place:

  • in the legal division of a major corporate organisation
  • with a Member of Parliament
  • in a barrister's chambers
  • with a firm of solicitors

Opportunities are generally located in and around London, and the north-west of England, and will take place in the summer of 2020 at a mutually convenient time.

When do the opportunities start and end?

The opportunities will likely take place in the summer vacation period but will be at a mutually convenient time for the successful applicant and host organisation. The work experience will last for a maximum of 3 days.

Can I undertake more than one opportunity?

You may apply for more than one work experience opportunity but can only accept one as part of the Mason Hayes Charitable Trust work experience programme.

It may be possible for eligible students to complete a Mason Hayes work experience opportunity and a work shadowing or UK summer internship. Please contact masonhayes@sussex.ac.uk if you are interested in completing more than one programme through the First-Generation Scholars Scheme.

Are the opportunities paid and can I claim back expenses?

All of the work experience opportunities as part of this programme are unpaid but the University will reimburse reasonable expenses, including travel and, depending on where the opportunity takes place, accommodation and subsistence. Who can apply?

The Mason Hayes work experience opportunities are only open to eligible First-Generation Scholars in their foundation, first or second year of study in the School of Law, Politics and Sociology.

I can't find what I'm looking for. Can I organise my own opportunity?

It is not possible to arrange your own work experience opportunity as part of this programme. For eligible students, the work shadowing and UK summer internship programmes provide the possibility of sourcing your own work experience. Please see the links above for further details.
