Previous Winners

Previous winning ideas include:

  • A bike hire business on campus to encourage cycling.  Many of the bikes will be recycled - having been abandoned in Brighton - and the scheme will involve fixing rescued bikes, offering advice to cyclists, and renting bikes to students at a low cost. This scheme was set up by a current International Relations student.

The business is now called the Espresso Mushroom Company and was set up by a recent Geography graduate.
  • A company which offers cricket tours specifically designed for cricket clubs, firms and anyone else who may want one.  The highly personalised tours will use the latest technology to provide what should be a fascinating experience for tourists. The business - Top Order Tours - was set up by a cricket enthusiast, and recent International Relations graduate.

A Winner's Experience

Serena Patel, winner in July 2012, says:

"When I was in school I created the idea of an Economics board game to be used in classes and the first-year of university to revise A-level theory and make lessons more fun and interactive.

After making it through the first round, and pitching my idea in the boardroom to a panel of judges I was delighted to win the £2000 grant. Along with the prize money I received office space in the Innovation Centre, which I use frequently to focus on my work. Furthermore, I was allocated a mentor who has been of great help in developing my idea.

I am now looking to use the money to get a prototype made and conduct market research. Winning StartUp Sussex has meant I can take my idea further and achieve all the things I had planned for my board game"
