Graduate internships

Find out how to research, arrange and apply for graduate internships in the UK

A graduate internship can help you get a foot in the door and explore whether a particular role or organisation is right for you. Internships are usually short-term opportunities that may last for a few months to a year.

Finding advertised internships

  • CareerHub - search our listings
  • Creative Access - paid internships for British BAME graduates in media and the arts
  • Work in startups - internships in startups
  • w4mp - internships in politics, government, charities and not-for-profits
  • ReliefWeb - internships in development across the world

Search our sector guides to find employer directories and sector-specific job sites.

Arranging your own internship

If you're interested in working for a particular organisation, you can approach them by making a speculative application.

Graduate internships in France and other EU countries

Countries such as France and Spain legally require an internship agreement, sometimes known as a convention de stage, to be signed by the employer, intern and University. Unfortunately, we are not able to issue these agreements for graduates - we can only issue them for current students.

Unpaid internships

All the internships we advertise on CareerHub are paid the national living wage as a minimum. However, unpaid internships are still common in some sectors, such as media, international development, politics and the environment.

Read TARGETJob’s information to help you determine whether an unpaid internship is legal and if you would find one beneficial. You can contact us if you have any questions about an internship - andrea.wall@sussex.ac.uk

Diversity internships

Some employers and organisations offer internship schemes specifically for diverse students, such as Change100's summer internships for graduates with disabilities and long-term conditions, Creative Access's graduate internships in the creative sector, and Development Pathway's graduate internship aimed at black graduates who want to work in development.

Check out our list of diversity opportunities to see what other internships might be available in various sectors. Our listings aren't exhaustive, so it's always worth looking on employers' websites too.
