Getting experience

In the current job market, building experience can be as important as your degree result in getting the graduate job you want. This might come from an internship with an employer in the sector you are interested in, doing the work you’d love to do. Equally, it could come from part-time work while you study or volunteering in your spare time. Or all of the above! Making the most of your work experience is essential, and learning how to sell your experience is equally important.

Sussex Plus has been set up to help you develop and articulate the skills you gain whilst at Sussex. Use it to best equip yourself for whatever you choose to do when you leave us.

Get the most from your work experience:

  • Consider carefully what you will gain from internships in general, and specific opportunities in particular. Weigh any potential long-term benefits against immediate financial and other personal implications
  • Make the most of any placement in terms of making contacts, learning new and developing existing skills/knowledge, and gaining experience
  • Learn how to negotiate with employers to ensure you make the most of your work experience
  • Think about how you will articulate the skills, knowledge and experience you have gained or developed in future applications and interviews
  • Use us for information, advice and guidance on any of the above
