  • Mountbatten Internship Programme - A 12-month graduate internship in New York offering practical and theoretical business experience
  • CoolWorks - Seasonal jobs in the US
  • SummerJobs.com - Search for summer jobs in the US. Use in conjunction with a Work Exchange Programme organisation which can organise a Visa for you
  • Camp America - Summer camps in the USA

Internships - J1 Visa

  • You are eligible to apply for internships in the USA of up to 12 months on a J1 visa. This is an exchange visa for work and study based exchange visitor programmes
  • You can apply within the UK if you are a UK or EU student. However, if you are a non-EU student, the US Consulate in London requires you to apply from your home country
  • You will need to find a designated sponsor. Recognised UK ones include IST Plus and BUNAC and Parenthese. Each will offer different things for the money, so do your research
  • Look for internships in the USA using GoinGlobal (login via CareerHub). There is an Internship Search facility, plus you can use the USA country guide for additional internship sites, as well as USA city guides 
  • You could also try Glassdoor or Linkedin or InternJobs.com

Work experience and internships organisations

There are lots of organisations offering international work experience opportunities. Prices, and services offered, will vary greatly, so make sure you do your research. Here are a few:

  • British Council - the British Council runs a range of programmes, including internship programmes, teaching assistant programmes
  • BUNAC - Work abroad and internship programmes for anyone aged 18-35. Includes Canada, the USA, Australia, New Zealand, China, South Africa and more
  • CCUSA - Summer camps, work experience and internships in the USA, plus options in Canada, Russia, Africa, Latin America and Asia
  • IST Plus - Summer programmes and professional internships in the USA, plus working holidays in Australia, New Zealand or Singapore and teaching in China or Thailand
  • Global Choices - Internship, teaching abroad, working holiday, volunteering and au pair opportunities. Countries covered include USA, Spain, New Zealand, Canada, Brazil, China, Australia and Argentina
