Taught postgraduate study

Find courses and get information on funding and how to apply for the UK and overseas

Find us on Canvas

Our Canvas site contains advice on postgraduate study, as well as finding part-time work, internships and experience, and graduate jobs.

If you're considering pursuing further study, it may help to think about:

  • your motivation – are you enthused by the subject?
  • your career plans – will the qualification be valued by employers? does this matter?
  • time and cost – are you able to commit to a further period of study? how will you fund it?
  • when and how you need to apply – what are the deadlines and course requirements?

HEFCE provides a helpful guide to asking the right questions about postgraduate study.

Researching courses

Course-finder websites are a good way to start your research and find out what UK courses are available.

Postgraduate study fairs and Open days

Attending a postgraduate study fair can help you learn more about institutions, their courses and what it’s like to study there. With many organisations all in one place, they’re a great opportunity to ask questions.

Visit universities as a prospective student to meet faculty and current students, learn more about courses, funding and scholarships. Explore university life and find out if the campus is for you.

Sussex hosts information sessions and a Masters open day where you can find out about all aspects of postgraduate study. Contact other institutions for details about their open days.

Other sources of funding and advice

Research when institutions are accepting applications, their deadlines and how you need to apply. Most universities open for applications a year in advance and it is advisable to apply early as applications can close at short notice.

Check out our presentation on Applying for postgraduate study [PPTX 5.52MB]

You may be required to provide a transcript of your marks as part of your application. You should provide results for all modules completed. Find out more about what Transcript and Alumni Services can provide for current students and recent finalists

Many universities ask prospective students to write a personal statement for postgraduate study and to submit their application via an online system. Some PGCE courses require applications to be made via UCAS.

You can get your personal statement checked by a Careers and Employability Consultant before you submit it. Book an appointment via CareerHub or send it to us via Ask a Question.
