Making the Future - Sussex's 50th anniversary fundraising campaign

A new ethics Centre of Excellence

Because ethics underpin everything we do

Answering the big questions of ethics

Students in seminarEthical questions are a daily part of any research, whether in the sciences, humanities or social sciences. Industrialisation, climate change, medical research and corruption – these are just a few of the many subject areas where key ethical issues are being vigorously debated inside academia and in the commercial world.

Against this backdrop ethics have become increasingly important as a dimension of research, and it is our firm belief that training in ethics should be mandatory for all researchers. It has also become a topic in its own right, from bio-ethics and global ethics to social and professional ethics.

We want to capitalise on this relevance and growing interest by creating a centre of excellence that will put Sussex in a position to lead the debate.

Leading the debate

Our goal now is to attract new senior academics, doctoral researchers and PhD scholars who will be able to capitalise on the opportunities presented by the growing prominence of ethics. This fresh influx of academics will add momentum to the ethics work that is already underway and give our centre of excellence a critical mass. There are close synergies with the work of the Sussex Centre for Corruption Studies and the resulting work will benefit other areas of study particularly within the School of Education and Social Work and the School of Business, Management and Economics.  The reach and importance of ethics in today’s society means that the impact of this work will be felt throughout our University and far beyond.
