Making the Future - Sussex's 50th anniversary fundraising campaign

Programmes

'Support from the Dr Mortimer and Theresa Sackler Foundation is allowing the Sackler Centre to attract the very best scientific talent to Sussex, ensuring our continuing success.'

Prof. Anil Seth, Co-Director of the Sackler Centre for Consciousness Science

Sussex has always strived to produce research that can shape and improve our world. The campaign will help to give our academics the freedom to take learning in new directions that will make a tangible, positive difference in the wider world.

We also want to invest in new programmes of study that respond to the needs of tomorrow’s students, and give them the opportunity to fulfill their potential so that they can make a contribution to our society. We want to foster a greater sense of entrepreneurship and innovation, and begin new strategic partnerships to enhance our contribution to the local and regional economy.

Transforming our world

Together we can transform our world and touch the lives of millions of people. Our academic community includes outstanding individuals with the energy and the brilliance to develop our knowledge through research – what we need now is the support of our friends to bring that potential to life.

Our priorities are:

Neuronal dysfunction and degeneration

Because we can find new answers and help to create new treatments for neurodegenerative diseases.

Translational cancer research

Because we can take another step closer to a cure and create a new generation of drugs to treat cancers in non-toxic ways and start tackling cancers we can’t yet treat.

The Sussex Centre for the Study of Corruption

Because we can lead the fight against corruption and its hugely damaging impact around the globe.

A new Centre of Excellence in Ethics

Because ethics underpins everything we do, we will investigate the questions which are a daily part of any research, whether in the sciences, humanities or social sciences.

The African climate change initiative

Because the world’s poorest people are the worst affected, we need to help create African experts in the complex issues of climate change mitigation and adaptation.

Developing the Newton Project

Because genius should be shared, we are developing an online archive which provides access to Sir Isaac Newton’s life work.

Honey bee research at the Laboratory of Apiculture and Social Insects

Because understanding bees and other social insects will help us to protect biodiversity and feed the world’s growing population.
