Autumn 2012 Phonathon is launched

2012 Sussex Phonathon Team

This month sees Sussex students telephoning our alumni to find out what they have been up to since leaving Sussex, inform them of news and developments on campus and to raise much needed support for the Sussex Fund. The Fund supports students who, through no fault of their own, are experiencing financial hardship. It also helps provide scholarships for the most gifted regardless of their ability to pay and supports student projects and societies that enhance the student experience.

There is a lot of fun to be had when talking to Sussex alumni - hearing stories that at times makes current student life appear an abstemious scholarly existence. There are many stories of occupations and sit-ins, and the throwing of red paint at an American ambassador and at a cinema screen in protest.

Third year music student, John Shaffer, was serenaded by an alumnus with his squeezebox, whilst Lawrence Bricher, second year history student, was invited for tea in Lewes by ‘a lovely lady.’

Naomi Dixon, second year anthropology student, commented on the real sense of community amongst her own team of callers and that of the previous Sussex generations that they are speaking to. She was also surprised and touched to hear of so many alumni that met their life partners here at Sussex.

Indeed, we are very lucky to have a couple who met and got married here on campus and are keen supporters of our students. The couple, who wish to remain anonymous, have pledged to match by 50 per cent any paperless direct debits that have been acquired during the phone campaign. This is the second year of this scheme and it is proving very popular among our new and previous supporters.

Our students will be trying to get through to nearly 10,000 alumni this month, but they won’t reach you all. If you do wish to receive a call this term, or in the Spring, then please do contact our office.
