When al-Walid decided to build the mosque of Damascus in the year 88/707, the Byzantine (Rum) emperor sent him then a gift consisting of a hundred thousand mithqals(1= 4.25g)of gold and forty mule loads (waqr) of mosaics, together with a thousand labourers.
