According to Janin, on the walls, painted or represented in mosaic, were the miracles of Our Lord and many episodes from his life up until his ascension.  Constantine V [741-775] there substituted mosaics representing ‘trees and all species of birds, animals and circles with lily leaves, cranes, crows and peacocks’. It is certain that these figures, little in harmony with the Christian religion, were not replaced by religions tableaux after the restoration of the cult of images [after the period of iconoclasm].
