Immune Influences on Brain & Behaviour: from Psychoneuroimmunology to Immunopsychiatry June 27th - 29th 2014

Neil Harrison & Dora Duka are delighted to welcome you to Brighton for the 2014 EBPS summer workshop:

We have an outstanding line-up of speakers many of whom are world leaders in the field of PNI and Immuno-Psychiatry.

Over the last few years there has been an explosion of interest in the relationship between the Immune system and Brain. This has been triggered in large part by realisation that inflammation plays an important role in common mental illnesses such as anxiety and depression and neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s.

The EBPS summer workshop will provide an excellent opportunity to hear about the latest developments in psychoneuroimmunology and learn about future therapeutic directions for the nascent field of Immuno-psychiatry.

Themes include:

Targeting the Immune system in Depression

  • An overview of the evidence linking inflammation to depression, results of current trials of anti-inflammatory medication and targets for future clinical trials

Inflammation, Memory & Dementia

  • How does inflammation modulate memory? A review of evidence demonstrating effects of inflammation on memory consolidation, long-term synaptic plasticity and neurogenesis and the progression of neurodegenerative disorders.

Immunotherapeutics for neurodegenerative disorders

  • An update on the biological and clinical outcomes of immunotherapy in Alzheimer’s disease.

Early life adversity, stress and depression/anxiety

  • Early life-stress is a risk factor for many psychiatric disorders including anxiety and depression. Recent evidence suggests that inflammation may play a critical role in mediating this link.

Role of brain Neuroimmune signalling in Alcohol Dependence

  • The mechanisms of binge drinking-induced brain damage are not clearly understood, but appear to involve oxidative changes in brain similar to aging and neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease. Neuroimmune signaling is increasingly implicated in this process.

We look forward to welcoming you to Brighton in June 2014.
