University of Sussex rated among UK top 20 institutions

The University of Sussex is ranked among the top 20 universities in the UK, according to a new league table in the Guardian’s University Guide, published today (12 May 2009).

Sussex is placed 18th overall, up 15 places from last year. In South-East England, the University is second only to Oxford.

Top-ranked subjects include Chemistry (1st), Sociology (5th), American Studies (7th) and Biosciences (7th).

The Guardian ranking follows on from other recent league tables that place Sussex among the top university performers: The Independent newspaper’s Complete University Guide saw Sussex rise four places to 25th in ranking published on April 30; the 2008 THES-QS World University Rankings in the Times Higher Education Supplement list Sussex among the top 20 universities in the UK, the top 50 in Europe and among the top 150 universities in the world; and the Sunday Times University Guide 2008, listed Sussex as the highest climber among the 30 top UK institutions.

The Guardian guide, places particular emphasis on teaching quality rather than just research impact, as rated by final-year students in the National Student Survey (NSS). The University of Sussex saw a strong improvement in its 2008 NSS score.

Other criteria for the Guardian include assessment as rated by the NSS, spending per student, staff-student ratio and job prospects.

The latest ranking statistics augment a trend towards steady and sustained improvement in league tables performance. University of Sussex Vice-Chancellor Professor Michael Farthing says: “These results are pleasing. Now we must focus on building upon this success so that Sussex will continue to grow and improve as one of the world’s leading universities for the 21st century. That means maintaining high standards in teaching and research provision and in our campus facilities, and continuing to respond to student feedback in the NSS.”
