University’s city shopfront to close as housing advice goes digital

The University of Sussex opened a city-centre shopfront in Lewes Road, Brighton, in 2015.

The University of Sussex’s city shopfront in Brighton is to close in September, when the current lease expires.

The information centre, at 91 Lewes Road near the Vogue Gyratory, opened in November 2015.

Since then it has provided a point of contact for engaging with current and future students, local residents and businesses, parents and teachers.

In particular, the shop has acted as a base for the University’s Housing team to offer advice to Sussex students who are looking for privately rented accommodation.

Over the last five years, though, the Housing team have developed a number of alternative ways to make guidance available to these students.

They provide online housing advice for new students and a wide range of information for current students via the Student Hub. They also hold ‘Rent in the City’ webinars for students who are moving into privately rented accommodation.

This summer, the Housing team are offering Zoom appointments for any student seeking support to chat with a Housing Officer.

Sussex students can also contact the Housing team on social media, either via Facebook (@SussexUniHousing), Instagram (@ushousingservices) or Twitter (@SussexHousing).

Helen Power-Hosking, Head of Commercial Services, says: “The Lewes Road information centre has been a useful base for us for nearly five years, but we are now moving forward with a much more exciting, virtual presence.

“We are working hard to make sure our students coming to study with us in autumn 2020 continue to feel informed about local housing options.”

When term starts in September, the Housing team will be available as usual for in-person enquiries at their campus location on the second floor of Bramber House.

Sussex Student Lettings, which currently has a base in the Lewes Road information centre, will continue to operate out of its on-campus office in Falmer House.
