Information for staff about industrial action

From Thursday 20 February, some staff will be exercising their legal right to strike. This action is taking place across 14 days, over a four-week period until Friday 13 March 2020.

The strike dates cover:

  • Week one – Thursday 20 and Friday 21 February
  • Week two – Monday 24, Tuesday 25 and Wednesday 26 February
  • Week three – Monday 2, Tuesday 3, Wednesday 4 and Thursday 5 March
  • Week four – Monday 9, Tuesday 10, Wednesday 11, Thursday 12 and Friday 13 March

The University and College Union (UCU) is also observing a period of action short of a strike (ASOS), until the end of April 2020.

Any period of industrial action is difficult for everyone involved. While the University respects the right of any staff member to take lawful industrial action, it will be working to ensure minimal disruption to students’ education.

UCU’s disputes with UCEA (the University and College Employers Association) over pay and conditions and with UUK (Universities UK) on pensions are ongoing and will need to be resolved at a national level.

The University is aware that constructive talks are ongoing at a national level and it is hoped that resolutions to these disputes can be found quickly.

The institution is entitled to withhold pay for individuals who breach their employment contract by striking and we reserve the right to do so at a rate of 1/365th of annual salary for each day of action. This is pro rata for part-time staff.

Please visit the staff web pages to find out more.

We have also been providing information to students and you can see that guidance on the Student Hub.
