BAME Staff Network to re-launch

Next month, the BAME Staff Network will be re-launching to provide a forum for BAME (Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic) staff to socialise, share their experiences and advocate for change at Sussex.

The Staff Network is open to all Professional Services staff and academic staff, including postgraduate students who teach across campus.

The re-launch will take place on Thursday 6 February from 12.15–1.45pm in Arts A108; refreshments will be provided for staff in attendance.

We will be joined by colleagues including members of the Race Equality Charter self-assessment team, who can inform staff on the ongoing work in this area.

The University joined the Race Equality Charter in December 2018 and is working towards an application under the Charter by February 2022.

The Network also aims to be an authoritative voice for BAME staff at Sussex and to promote race equality through active involvement and consultation on the University's strategy, policies and guidance on race equality.

In addition, it will campaign and lobby on race equality by preparing submissions to public consultations, public forums and University governing bodies.

Saul Becker, Provost and Chair of the Race Equality Charter team, will attend the re-launch event on 6 February and address the network, reinforcing its importance to the University going ahead.

Saul said: “As Provost and Chair of the Race Equality Charter team at Sussex, it’d be wonderful for me to see BAME staff from across the University in attendance at the Staff Network, which will provide invaluable insight as we move ahead on this agenda.

“Line managers and Heads of School have been asked to allow their BAME staff to attend the meeting, within working hours, so we can work towards creating an inclusive campus for all.”
