The Exchange: Is It Still A Man's World?

Thursday 5 March 18:00 until 20:00
Attenborough Centre for the Performing Arts
Part of the series: The Exchange

Are we in a golden age of successful, strong and powerful women, who have finally broken the glass ceiling? Are women being treated and viewed equally to men or is there still a long way to go?

‘Gender issues’ have become a hot topic in recent years, with many women now feeling more empowered to call out male chauvinism and demeaning behaviour – particularly in the workplace, a sphere traditionally dominated by men. But has the 2017 #MeToo movement, and associated press attention, really done anything to improve a woman’s lot in life?

In support of International Women’s Day and the continuing importance of highlighting equality, the next Exchange event will be exploring these dilemmas from many different viewpoints. Our panel of experts will try to determine whether this new spotlight on female empowerment has resulted in significant changes to the lives of ordinary women? Or whether not very much has really changed.

Sussex academic, Professor Lucy Robinson, will Chair. Lucy is a Professor in Collaborative History at the University of Sussex and an expert in pop-culture, sexual identity and feminism. She’ll keep the debate moving along and provide plenty of opportunities for a range of views to be heard.

The Exchange from the University of Sussex encourages free expression, lively discussion and the sharing of thoughts and ideas.

Proceeds from this event go to the Sussex Fund. This provides vital support for students when they need it most, either through scholarships, hardships grants or other initiatives which improve their wellbeing.

Tickets standard tickets cost £5 or £3 concession. Book via the ACCA website here.
