Bees for Educators - workshop

Saturday 4 July 11:00 until 15:00
Laboratory of Apiculture and Social Insects, University of Sussex

LASI lab is launching a Bees for Educators workshop

Bees provide many educational opportunities as well as opportunities to link people of all ages to nature and science. Almost everyone is curious about bees and nature. LASI is starting an exciting new outreach program called Bees for Educators to help people get involved with this. We are developing online materials (videos on YouTube, web pages etc.), written materials (pamphlets and notes) and hands-on training workshops to do this. By educators we do not mean just teachers and target audiences of school pupils. We want Bees for Educators to reach people of all ages from 5 to 105.

The idea of the workshops is that people who are involved in education (in the broadest sense) can be trained so that they can then lead a group though a short and interesting 15-60 minute activity on bees and other flower-visitors, and even train more people themselves.

Bees for Educators will focus on all types of bees including bumble bees, honey bees and other bee species visiting flowers, as well as other flower-visiting insects such as hoverflies and butterflies. Importantly, to get involved an organisation or educator won’t need to set up bee hives with all the difficulty that entails. All they will need will be a sunny hour plus a patch of flowers, which could be in a garden, park, field, lawn or waste ground. It could be autumn blooming ivy growing on a wall or spring blooming dandelions and other flowers in a lawn. As for equipment, this will be minimal such as a watch, pen and clipboard. The main things needed are simply a pair of eyes and enthusiasm. Bees visiting flowers very seldom sting. The exercises will be no more dangerous than a walk in the park.

The workshop will last half a day and during this time we will train you in 3 or 4 activities that you can repeat with your group, with a typical activity taking 15-60 minutes to do.
