Mastering sustainable development online

On 1 July 2019, the University of Sussex Business School launched its online MSc Sustainable Development, led by Dr Saurabh Aurora.  With 22 students already enrolled, this is the largest single intake on any degree that online learning provider Pearson has launched to date across the university portfolio.

Together with two other online masters degrees, MSc International Marketing and MSc Energy Policy, the Business School now has a total of 75 students enrolled in online learning, and this is forecast to expand further. 

National and international demand for a first class online education is growing, with access to flexible learning and the benefits that brings. Students can now experience a Sussex education anywhere in the world. The courses are fully flexible, which appeals to those with full-time jobs and busy lives. If students need to pause their studies due to unexpected circumstances, they can do so easily and re-join when ready.

Mark Fisher, Director for Online Learning at the Business School, said:

“Our digital offer is going from strength to strength with the launch of the MSc Sustainable Development. Students will learn to analyse the politics of sustainable development policies and practices. Shared modules with the MSc Energy Policy degree, Global Studies and the Institute of Development Studies will also increase collaboration across the School and wider University.

“We now have a fantastic team of academics across all three courses, who are developing engaging and exciting course content. There has been a huge amount of hard work and effort by all involved. We’re now looking ahead to develop further online courses.”

As one of the top UK Business Schools for energy policy research, the online MSc Energy Policy, led by Dr Karoline Rogge, provides students with access to world-renowned academic research alongside the latest thinking from Sussex Energy Group. Teaching focuses on contemporary challenges and debates within the energy sector. 

Our MSc International Marketing, led by Alison McGregor, emphasises real-world case studies, with a particular focus on marketing ethics, digital marketing and consumer behaviour.

The Business School is working with Pearson over the next ten years to develop its online portfolio. Pearson are responsible for student recruitment, marketing and module structure design, while the Business School leads on developing teaching material and providing learning support.
