Sussex and Renmin University of China launch Joint Strategic Seed Fund second round

Vice-Chancellor Professor Adam Tickell with Renmin University of China Chairwoman of the Council, Dr Nuo Jin, in March 2017 on a visit to Renmin where both universities agreed to establish the Joint Seed Fund.

Round two of the Sussex-Renmin Joint Strategic Seed Fund is now open for applications.

The fund builds on the successes of existing collaborations with Renmin, one of China’s foremost research universities, and a global leader in humanities and social sciences. The Beijing-based institution houses a number of influential research centres and think tanks and has a high-calibre professional alumni network, particularly in business, law, media and politics.

Funded activities may include visits for research groups to establish new contacts and explore opportunities for collaboration, preparing joint research bids, supporting internationally co-authored publications, and the development of new interdisciplinary research programmes.

In the first round, awards were made to Sussex’s Dr Monica Masucci and Renmin’s Professor Kangtao Ye in support of a project to design and carry out a cross-country survey, led by the Intrapreneurship HUB, to identify how UK and Chinese companies from different sectors support corporate entrepreneurship and innovation.

Dr Ding Chen, Lecturer in Finance at Sussex, and his Renmin collaborator Dr Biao Guo were awarded funding for joint research in quantitative finance, exploring investor rationality with regard to different financial instruments offered by the same company. The research will help investor strategies and risk management, with a view to improving market information and disclosure.

Staff from both universities can apply to the second round of this fund, and further information can be found on the web page about the International Partnerships Scheme. The second round closes on 30 April 2019. To discuss prospective proposals, contact Peter Boddy, International Partnerships Manager (p.boddy@sussex.ac.uk).
