Gordon Harold appointed Deputy Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research Excellence Framework)

Professor Gordon Harold

The University of Sussex has appointed Professor Gordon Harold from the School of Psychology to lead the institution’s submission to the 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF 2021).

Welcoming the appointment of Professor Harold as the new Deputy Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research Excellence Framework), Vice-Chancellor Adam Tickell said: “Gordon has an outstanding personal research track record and his work has extraordinary impact in the UK and further afield.”

The REF 2021 is a UK-wide exercise to profile and showcase the excellence of research in UK universities. It has significant financial and reputational effects for research in the UK, and for individual universities, and their schools and departments.

Professor Harold said: “Leading this exercise on behalf of the University of Sussex constitutes enormous responsibility, and opportunity.

“Promoting high-quality research capability, showcasing research strengths and real-world impacts as well as addressing challenges in delivering the University’s research ambitions is a portfolio of responsibility that I enthusiastically embrace. I will work very hard to deliver this together with colleagues and partners from within and beyond the University.

“Our performance in REF 2021 has substantive implications for all areas of University life, and is an exercise that all sectors of the University can productively contribute to – and, I hope, positively feel part of as we pick up the pace of REF 2021 preparations over the coming months.

“I look forward to productively working with all sectors of the University in promoting and delivering a REF 2021 performance that we can all be proud of.”

Professor Harold holds the Andrew and Virginia Rudd Chair at Sussex and is Professor of Child and Adolescent Mental Health. He is also the inaugural Director of the Rudd Centre for Adoption Research and Practice.

Over a three-year term, Professor Harold will combine the role as Deputy Pro-Vice-Chancellor with his academic post, and will be a member of the University Leadership Team (ULT).
