Summer facelifts in progress for Students’ Union venues

Frida Gustafsson, President of the Students' Union and USSU operations team views progress in the new bar

The new outdoor space at Northfield bar gets a refresh

The bright new bar is already in place for the new Northfield Students' Union venue.

In June, work started on the refurbishment of the Northfield social centre and renovation is now well underway to transform the area into a new Students’ Union bar/café.

Inside, the colourful new bar has already been installed, and the space that will house the kitchens and store rooms is also making great progress.

Outdoors, the patio area is also receiving a facelift - with new fencing to help minimise noise spill to the nearby residences, and lighting that will allow people to enjoy the outside space into the evening.

Last week, Frida Gustafsson, President of the University of Sussex Students’ Union, visited the Northfield project, together with members of staff from the Students’ Union.

Frida commented: “I'm so excited to see the progress of the work at Northfield bar, an exciting new venture for the Students' Union. It's been great to work with the University on this project, and I'm really looking forward to welcoming our students into our new bar, which will be ready to open this September, in time for the next academic year.”

The Northfield bar is just one of the improvement projects underway to refresh the Students' Union social spaces this summer. Work has already started in Falmer Bar and Room 76 to ensure the offering for the coming academic year is better than ever.

New, large parasols have been installed covering the whole Falmer Bar patio area. In winter months this will be completely enclosed with lighting and an outdoor heat system, which will provide added capacity all year round.

In Room 76, the service area is getting a new look to match the design in Northfield. The transformation will also allow for both the cafe and Pearl's Bubble Tea to expand the offering throughout the working week and, as of September, will include Saturdays as well. It will also open later into the evenings with a full bar service, and will continue to host live music sessions.
