University of Sussex aims to create inclusive campus by 2025

The University of Sussex has committed to bold action that will transform the campus into one that is experienced as inclusive by all staff and students.

Launching the University’s equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) strategy for the next seven years, senior leaders have set out the necessary steps to ensure that all members of the Sussex community have equal access to opportunities.

Inclusive Sussex is the first enabling strategy to emerge from A Better University for a Better World, the University’s strategic framework for 2018-25.

It sets out four key goals - equality, diversity, accessibility and flexibility - and outlines how progress will be measured to make Sussex truly inclusive.

The strategy pledges to “provide equal access to excellent learning, research and employment opportunities regardless of physical or unseen disabilities”. It also commits the University to become “a place that celebrates diversity and tolerance” and is “flexible by default”.

Vice-Chancellor Adam Tickell says: “Achieving equality, diversity and inclusion is fundamental to the success of the University of Sussex.

“This is a collective endeavour across management, staff and students. I am personally committed to driving through the changes and commitments outlined in our new EDI strategy.”

Claire Annesley, Deputy Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Equality and Diversity), says: “What is necessary for some is generally good for all. In delivering change to address inequalities for particular parts of our communities, we will strive to deliver solutions that deliver benefits to all of us.

“We hope to create a culture where everyone thrives, making Sussex a beacon in the sector nationally and internationally.

“If we can achieve the outcomes we have defined for each of our four key goals, we believe we can create a truly inclusive campus at Sussex by 2025.”
