Four Sussex alumni named in Queen’s Birthday Honours list

A number of Sussex alumni have received honours in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list, published on 8 June.

The honours are awarded for service to the country to mark the Queen's official birthday in June each year.

Dr Lucy Worsley

Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) - for services to history and heritage.       

Lucy graduated from Sussex in 2002 with a History of Art DPhil and received an honorary degree from Sussex in 2005. She is Historian and Chief Curator at Historic Royal Palaces, and a well-known television presenter.


Dr Neil Churchill

Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) – for services to the voluntary sector and carers.  

Neil graduated in 2016 with an Art History PhD. He is currently Director of Patient Experience for NHS England.


Penelope Tassoni

Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) – for services to early years education.

Penelope studied Creative Writing at Sussex in 2007 and currently works as an early years author and trainer. She is also Honorary President of the Professional Association for Childcare and Early Years.


Dr Simon Leslie Edwards 

Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) - for services to youth work and the education of young people.

Simon graduated from Sussex in 2007 with an Education Studies MA. He then went on to complete his PhD at Sussex in 2013, also in the field of education. He is a Senior Lecturer in Youth Studies at the University of Portsmouth.
