Be inspired by the Festival of Doctoral Research

The Doctoral School are excited to announce Sussex’s very first Festival of Doctoral Research, a three-day programme of events designed to showcase the outstanding doctoral research currently underway throughout the university.

The Festival runs from Tuesday 26 to Thursday 28 June, and current highlights include:

  • Three Minute Thesis: visitors are invited to watch as a group of brave PhD students take on the challenge of explaining their 80,000 word thesis in just three minutes… before a live audience!
  • Living Library: in this event, visitors play the role of ‘readers’, and can check out a living ‘book’ in the form of a PhD Researcher. Your book will tell you about their research story over a cup of coffee, and you’ll be able to ask any questions you might have.
  • In PubhD, three PhD students will explain their research to an audience at ‘pub-level’ - understandable to everybody, with no academic jargon. At the end, each speaker will be rewarded with a drink of their choice.
  • Those attending our Public Engagement Pop-Up will have the chance to see the innovative ways in which our doctoral researchers are taking their research to festivals, schools and public spaces to engage and inspire the public.

There will also be opportunities for reflection and investigation. In our opening talks, Dr Fiona Denney (Brunel University) and Sussex’s Dr Jeremy Niven will be discussing the mental health of doctoral researchers, with a focus on how we, as a community, can become more pro-active in our approach to wellbeing. We’ll also be holding several workshops for doctoral researchers. Take a look at the full programme here.

For all attending, the Festival will be a great opportunity to learn about, and share ideas with, our doctoral researchers. For those considering postgraduate study, the Festival will offer a real glimpse into the Sussex research community, and the chance to network with others in their field.

How can you get involved?

For doctoral students, there are several ways to get involved in the Festival. Simply submit an image showcasing your research to our Research Image Competition, and you could win £300. Or why not become a ‘living book’ in our ‘Living Library’? You’ll be able to share your research and help to inspire others. These are just a couple of options – take a look at the full programme, and email researcher-development@sussex.ac.uk if you’d to take part.
