Sussex appoints its first permanent Director for the Student Experience

Director for the Student Experience, Jayne Aldridge

The University of Sussex has appointed Jayne Aldridge as its first permanent Director for the Student Experience. Jayne joins Sussex from the University of Kingston where she has been Director, Services for Students since 2012.

In this new role Jayne will lead several of the University’s professional services units under one division, as the University introduces structural changes to better deliver exceptional services for students.

As Director for the Student Experience, Jayne will be the University’s principal Professional Services lead for all student facing activities. The University’s recent review led by Dr Andrew West has recommended a new structure for many of these services, with greater integration and in the longer-term housed together in a single student centre. Jayne will be considering those recommendations when she takes up her new role in early May.

During her time at the University of Kingston, Jayne was responsible for the management of more than 90 staff and oversaw the integration of nine professional services team across the University into three thematic groups to enhance the overall experience for more than 20,000 students, which included the introduction of a 24/7 online enquiry management centre that receives more than 90,000 enquiries per year.

Prior to joining Kingston University in 2009, Jayne was Head of Student Services at the University of West London, having also spent two years as Head of Student Support at Goldsmiths. Jayne’s extensive career in Higher Education has seen her take on senior roles at the Department of Education as well as being a Development Officer at the National Union of Students (London). She secured the position of President of the Student Union at the West London Institute of Higher Education in 1991.

Jayne has held several voluntary roles in some of the most prominent organisations in the Higher Education sector, including current Chair of AMOSSHE – the Student Services Organisation; Elizabeth Nuffield Education Foundation; and former Chair of National Association of Student Money Advisors. She currently represents the sector on groups led by the Department for Education and the Student Loans Company and has previously held representative roles on groups/committees of Quality Assurance Agency (QAA), Universities UK, Uniaid, Legal Services Commission, and the Commission for Racial Equality.

Debora Green, currently the University’s Interim Director for the Student Experience has been appointed as Deputy Director for the Student Experience and Head of Student Wellbeing.
