Take part in Go Green Week

As part of the University’s Go Greener programme to become one of the most sustainable universities in the UK, we’re supporting the national Go Green Week (12-16 February).

Director of Estates and Facilities Management, Simon Neale, said: “Go Green Week is a great opportunity to get involved with a real variety of sustainable activities across campus.

“There’s so many things going on this year – with flower planting, tree plants, a beach clean, film screenings and ‘bike trains’ to take the fear-factor out of commuting to work on two wheels.

“Please do sign up for at least one of these events – I think it’s really important that everybody at Sussex plays their part to help us meet our ambitious Go Greener targets.”

A variety of activities are being run throughout the week by the University Estates Team, Sussex Students’ Union, SussexFood and even the Balfour Beatty site construction team.

All week activities

  • Hot drinks discounts: bring-your-own-mug discount at Students’ Union bars; 30p discounts at SussexFood outlets when you use a Mug For Life

  • Put your green fingers to use:
    With allotments already on campus by Park Village, Essex House, and Chichester I, Sussex Roots are always looking for more volunteers to work on them and keep them growing. If you want to help, have a team willing to contribute, or are even willing to start up your own allotment, please e-mail

  • Warp-It free furniture shop:
    As part of our dedication to Warp-It, we’ll be giving away free furniture behind East Slope Bar to anyone who wants or needs it. Please email for more details on the giveaway. More about Warp-It.

  • Bike Trains:
    Leaving from The Level at 8.30am every morning – if you’re a bit nervous using your bike to get to work then why not join this friendly group of fellow cyclists to help get you there safely.

  • Veggie and vegan specials at East Slope and Falmer bar.

Monday 12 February

  • Solar panel tour (11.00am - 12.00 noon; 12.30pm - 1.30pm): 
    Take a tour of campus to see the solar panels installed across the University, learning of the technology behind them and the hurdles that were overcome to get them built. Please email to sign up.
  • Families ‘Plant and Play’ (1.00pm – 4.00pm; Norwich House Family Room):
    Bring the whole family to this planting session with plenty to keep everyone entertained.
  • Meat-free Monday lunch at Eat Central.

Tuesday 13 February

  • Litter pick in the park (10.00am - 1.00pm):
    We will be tidying up the southern section of Stanmer Park along with their park rangers. Tea and coffee will be provided. For more information and to sign up please email

  • Beach clean (10.00am - 3.00pm):
    Sign up to work alongside Brighton & Hove Council and tidy up the seafront between the two piers. Meet by the zipwire on the east side of Palace Pier. Please email to take part.

  • Free Dr Bike bicycle maintenance for the tough winter months at the Tuesday Market (11.00am – 3.00pm; Falmer House Quad).

Wednesday 14 February

  • Plant some wildflowers on campus (2.00pm - 3.30pm):
    We will be planting wildflowers to help develop a new sensory garden by Norwich House - sowing seeds in flowerbeds which have been built from reclaimed wood on campus. Please e-mail to take part.

  • Wellbeing Wednesday Walk (12.00pm – 1.30pm):
    SEF’s Nic Carstens will lead a wellbeing walk open to all staff along the Boundary Trail on campus, meeting first at the Sports Centre. E-mail to take part.

Thursday 15 February

  • Eco Crafternoon (11.00am – 3.00pm; Room 76, Falmer House):
    Get crafty with professional eco-crafters.
  • Litter pick in the woods: run together with Balfour Beatty site construction team (1.00pm - 2.00pm). Meet outside Sussex House reception. Please email to take part.

Friday 16 February

  • Plant some new trees on campus (10.00am – 12.00 noon):
    A team of volunteers will be planting 100 new trees on campus using a variety of saplings and ‘whips’; meeting at Eat Central in Bramber House. Please e-mail take part.

  • Food Waste Café (12.00 noon onwards outside Bramber House):
    Working with the Real Junk Food Project for a pay as you feel lunch.
