Shadow Development Secretary meets with Sussex migration experts

Shadow Secretary of State for International Development, Kate Osamor MP, meets with academics from the Migrating out of Poverty Consortium

The Shadow Secretary of State for International Development, Kate Osamor MP, visited the University on 25 January to meet with academics from Sussex’s Migrating out of Poverty Consortium (MOOP).

During her visit she also met with Vice-Chancellor Adam Tickell and Pro-Vice Chancellor (Research) Michael Davies.

MOOP research contextualises inequalities experienced by migrants and their families before, during and after migration - providing crucial evidence to develop an inclusive International Development policy.

The Shadow Secretary of State visited Sussex primarily to meet with MOOP’s Dr Priya Deshingkar to help inform the development of policy and feed into a report due to be published later in the year.

Dr Deshingkar said: "We were privileged to spend a day with Kate Osamor MP who was very engaged with the different topics that were discussed by MOOP researchers – such as the migration industry; the impact on households left behind; gender and generational relations as well as post-Brexit migration policy. Her passion and commitment to International Development were evident and led to fruitful discussions for further collaboration."

Kate Osamor MP said: “It was great to meet with academics from the Migrating out of Poverty consortium at the University. Academics working hard to provide research are unsung heroes and provide the evidence to inform how we can develop effective policies to improve people’s lives.”

The Communications and External Affairs division will continue to seek similar opportunities as part of the University’s external engagement strategy to engage with all politicians from all parties to help inform public policy discourse.
