University signs agreement to implement new virtual learning environment

The University of Sussex has entered into an agreement with leading educational technology provider Instructure, to implement a next-generation virtual learning environment (VLE).

Known as Canvas, the new platform will support both the on- and off-campus needs of the University and enrich the way that students can learn online and collaborate with academics.

A fully cloud-based VLE, Canvas will allow Sussex to significantly enhance its digital teaching and learning space for students and staff, while technical support will be available 24/7 from Instructure.

The new VLE represents a major investment in the resources provided for students, and positions Sussex at the forefront of digital learning. Canvas offers intuitive tools for the creation, organisation and sharing of learning materials, powerful online quizzing capabilities, and engaging features for communicating and interacting online.

Project sponsor and Pro-Vice Chancellor for Planning and Resources, Professor Stephen Shute, said: “This is an important development in improving the student experience here at Sussex, but it is also about providing new tools that enable our academics to reap the benefits that technology can bring.

“The Canvas system is intuitively designed and will allow us to support students throughout their time here, in an impressive digital environment.

“We look forward to sharing more information with you all, as we begin the implementation process with Instructure.”

Dr David Walker, Head of Technology Enhanced Learning, said: “Canvas is a state-of-the art virtual learning environment built upon modern cloud technology. The implementation of Canvas will deliver a step change in our digital learning environment, enabling us to innovate our pedagogy and develop richer and more distinctive opportunities for active, creative and experiential learning.”

The University has also recently signed a partnership agreement with Pearson to launch a suite of new online distance learning Masters courses in 2018.
