Dr Diana Ibanez-Tirado was awarded the Irene Hilgers Memorial Prize

Dr Diana Ibañez-Tirado, Associate Researcher at the Department of Anthropology and the Sussex Asia Centre, was awarded the Irene Hilgers Memorial Prize for her article “‘How can I be post-Soviet if I was never Soviet?’ Rethinking categories of time and social change – a perspective from Kulob, southern Tajikistan”. DOI: 10.1080/02634937.2014.983705

The prize was announced at the Annual Conference of the Central Eurasian Studies Society in Princeton University in November 2016. The Irene Hilgers Memorial Prize is awarded annually for the best article published in the previous volume of the journal Central Asian Survey by a junior scholar, and is dedicated to the memory and scholarly achievements of Irene Hilgers. Hilgers died tragically young in 2008, shortly before completing her doctoral dissertation at the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology. Her dissertation was published posthumously as Why Do Uzbeks Have to be Muslims? Exploring Religiosity in the Ferghana Valley.
