Sussex economics alum appointed to new European Commission Fiscal Board

A Sussex economics alum is one of five globally renowned financial experts appointed to the EC's new European Fiscal Board to advise the Commission on fiscal matters.
Mateusz Szczurek, who graduated from Sussex with a PhD in Economics in 2005 and was the Polish Minister of Finance from 2013-2015, was chosen for the role by a selection panel comprising high-level officials from the Commission and Council of Ministers.
He has been appointed as a Member of the Board alongside the following experts:
- Roel Beetsma (Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Business and Chairman of the Department of Economics and Econometrics, University of Amsterdam)
- Massimo Bordignon (Professor of Public Economics, Catholic University of Milan)
- Sandrine Duchêne (General Secretary, AXA France)
- Niels Thygesen (Chair; Professor Emeritus of International Economics, University of Copenhagen).
The Board has been set up to provide the Commission with independent and impartial guidance on implementation of EU fiscal policy and will publish an annual report of its activities.
Other current roles held by Mateusz include teaching public finance and international economics at Warsaw University, and Associate Director and Lead Regional Economist at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
His previous positions include Chief Economist of ING Poland and Chief Economist of ING Group for Central Europe and Eastern Europe.
