Geoff Oldham
It is with deep regret that we inform you that Professor Geoff Oldham passed away on Sunday 1 October 2017, aged 88.
With Chris Freeman, Geoff founded SPRU just over 50 years ago in 1966. Geoff served as Deputy Director before becoming Director in 1982, a post he held until 1993. During this time, he was a key figure in the SPRU ‘Developing Countries Group’, carrying out pioneering work with Charles Cooper, Martin Bell and others. Geoff’s work on science and technology policy and developing countries is unparalleled.
After stepping down as SPRU Director, he continued to work on issues relating to science, technology and development until very recently, his infectious enthusiasm and boundless stamina undimmed.
We pass on our sincere condolences to his wife, Brenda, and other members of his family. At SPRU we are considering the best way to commemorate Geoff’s life and work. As a first step, you are welcome to contribute your own personal messages at the end of this page.
