Current doctoral students

The Business Finance research group offers supervision to doctoral students studying company finance in both public and private companies as well as the evolution of start-ups to different types of public and private companies.

Current students

ChenChen Huang

Chen came to Sussex as a postgraduate research student in 2015. His  main research interest is the area of Initial Public Offerings (IPOs).  

Chen completed a degree in International Business at the Krakow University of Economics in 2013. In 2013, he started a Masters at Middlesex University majoring at Financial Management and graduated in 2015 with distinction. He completed his quantitative research master dissertation titled “The Impact of 2008 Financial Crisis on VC-backed and non-VC-backed IPOs in the short-run: An empirical study on AIM in the UK”.

KarliChrysoula Karli

Chrysoula's research interests lie in the areas of migration in accordance with finance, as she is specializing in the financial determinants that affect the phenomenon internationally.

Her research has been presented on various highly rated European Conferences including the Annual European Conference of Sociology and the prestigious International Conference of Sociology, European Accounting Association and European Finance Association. She has published in highly ranked International Journals, including the Journal of Maritime Economics and Logistics. 

Prior to joining the School as a PhD student, Chrysoula worked as a research assistant in the Business School of the University of Surrey where she obtained an MSc in Crime and Criminal Justice.

TahaTaha Khosravi 

Taha is a full-time PhD student. He is currently pursuing a PhD thesis investigating the bank lending channel of monetary transmission mechanism in the newly accessed EU member states and analysing the effectiveness of measures conducted by the European Central Bank in the aftermath of the 2008-09 financial crisis aimed at facilitating banks’ credit standards concerning the approval of loans or credit lines to enterprises, households and consumer credit. 

Taha holds a BSc in Business Management and an MSc in Finance and Investment from the University of Brighton.

LazarusLazarus Mabvira 

Lazarus is currently reading for a PhD in Finance at the University of Sussex and his research is focused on the impact of banking sector competition on financial stability in the G7 after the Global Financial Crisis of 2007-08.  Lazarus is also taking professional examinations with the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) at the Management Level.

He holds a First Class BSc (Hons) Degree in Accounting & Finance and an MSc in Banking & Finance (with Distinction). Prior to his PhD, Lazarus worked in the financial services sector. He currently advises and consults for an AIMS Accountants accredited practice on cashflow, accounting, and tax issues on a part-time basis. 

Maslinawati Mohamad Maslinawati Mohamad

Maslinawati is a Lecturer in Finance at the Universiti Teknologi MARA in Malaysia. She joined the University of Sussex to pursue a PhD in Finance.

Her PhD thesis contains three essays in corporate finance covering takeovers, executive compensation and earnings management at distressed firms.

Her supervisors include Surendranath Jory and Bruce Hearn. One of her essays was presented at the 2016 Portsmouth – Fordham conference on Banking & Finance.
