Course outline
This course will cover the period 27BC - AD1700. It will explore the role of art within society, raising questions about the nature and function of images and art objects within their social, political, economic and historical contexts, and dealing with a variety of theoretical and conceptual issues about the production and perception of art in this period, such as gender, class and imperialism.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the course, a successful student should be able to:
1 Discuss visual material critically and constructively;
2 Show an awareness of the historical period covered by the course;
3 Understand the many and different factors influencing the appearance and production of art objects.
