Course description

Course outline

The aim of the course is to provide a framework for understanding current anthropological issues in the Latin American region, as well as how Latin American anthropology (both anthropology on Latin America and anthropology by Latin Americans) has contributed to the development of the wider anthropological discipline.
Some of the themes covered in the course will engage with anthropological understanding of colonialism, urbanization, gender, race, healing and transnationalism.
The course is structured to illuminate key ethnographic pieces through selected theoretical works and to situate them within a historical/conceptual development of the discipline in the region. Students will be able to read selected anthropological material produced on different geo-political regions of Latin America (Mesoamerica, the Caribbean, the Andean region, Amazonia and the South Cone).
