Abortion Privacy/Abortion Secrecy: What's the Difference and Why Does it Matter?

Prof Sanger's talk is drawn from her new book,Professor Carol Sanger of Columbia Law School will discuss the question of why women -- or certainly women in the United States -- do not discuss abortion at the level of personal experience. It is a matter of personal privacy, or is something darker at work? Sanger argues that abortion silence has consequences not only for women who fear the stigma disclosure might bring about, but for public discussion of abortion. This has led to a co-opting of the public narrative about who has abortions and why. At a moment in U.S. history when abortion's legality has been put on the chopping block, Sanger discusses the progression from private to public to political discussion, and why the matter
is so crucial right now.
