What are you studying and which year are you in?

second year Politics and International Relations

What are your interests?

My passion is politics, especially European politics and security and defence policies. I go to politics society where there are great debating events and speakers coming in from all areas of politics and all political backgrounds.

What do you love about Sussex?

This is one of the things I love about Sussex, how they really do try as much as they can to install and keep passions within there subject field and not just focused on the academic side of university life. Other ways that they love to help their students is through all the support they have in place, this is one of the major reasons I chose this university. I also love living in Brighton and being so close to the sea. The location of Sussex university is something no where else had to offer, with a city, beach and national park all in 20 minutes of each other.

Why did you want to be a student caller?

I wanted to be a student caller as I wanted to learn about how much Sussex has changed over the years and thought what better way to do this then talk to the alumni of the university and get others first hand experience of their time at Sussex. I also think the work the Sussex Fund does is invaluable to the students here and wanted to do my little bit to say thank you for the support they off to the students here.

The fact that the university has such a diverse community means that it welcomes everybody and out of the five values that Sussex upholds, the one that really spoke to me was, kindness.

Why did you want to be a student caller?

The reason why I wanted to be a student caller was because I felt as though it is really worthwhile. The Sussex Fund has helped me in countless ways and I think it is time to give back. Not to mention, I wanted to have a more active role within the University and ensuring that Sussex continues to gain the support it seeks and deserves is the perfect way to achieve this.

I've just finished Development Economics MSc and will be starting a PhD in Economics in February 2019.

What are your interests?

Ballet, Pluralist Economics at Sussex, basketball, singing.

What do you love about Sussex?

Sussex has been a home away from home, where I met an amazing bunch of people and learnt much more than what was taught inside the classrooms. Few of the things that made me fall in love with Sussex were the diversity amongst the students, the support from the faculty, and the supportive environment that the students build here.

Why did you want to be a student caller?

Coming from a developing country, I went through the journey of putting together enough funds to be able to experience the education and experiences that Sussex offers. I wanted to become a student caller so that I can help raise funds for the students who are being held back by some financial difficulty and make their realise their true potential.

What do you love about Sussex?

At the heart of the South Downs National Park, Sussex University is situated in a great location. It is a breath of fresh air away from the busy city life. The opportunities at Sussex allow every individual to feel comfortable and try something new. Last academic year I spent studying in Singapore. From the help of the Sussex FGS scholarship, I was able to embark on my Asian adventure.

Why did you want to be a student caller?

As a student caller, I want to help our alumni reflect on their time at university. As university is such a memorable period, it is interesting to hear how it has shaped the lives of past Sussex students. I enjoy talking to others about their life experiences as it is conversations like these which shape new adventures.

Set against the backdrop of the South Downs, studying at Sussex is a serene experience.

Why did you want to be a student caller?

I wanted to be a student caller for this campaign because it offers some amazing opportunities. Firstly, it provides the chance to engage in interesting conversations with alumni and to garner wisdom and advice that might aid me upon finishing my degree. I love talking. I love standing in front of an audience, be it for talking or presenting. I am also a part of the Bruneian Singapore Malaysian Society and I plan to be a part of the Commitee team by Next Year. I also used to play for the Basketball team back in HighSchool in Brunei.

What do you love about Sussex?

One thing I love about Sussex is it’s huge diversity. People from all walks of life are here, so it really does feel like home away from home. Everyone here is generally nice and easily approachable. Apart from that, just half an hour down the road by bus and you’ll reach Brighton, often referred to as London by Sea and you’ll be in a city like no other.

Why did you want to be a student caller?

First of all, I wanted to be a student caller and part of this campaign because I absolutely love speaking and talking, especially when it comes to meeting new people. Secondly, This campaign really does help benefit those in need of aid and assistance. I have a mate back home who gave up his dream of coming to Uni in order to work and support his parents. If I could, I wouldn’t want students or future students to go through what he went through because it really is a life changing experience when he made that decision.

At the same time, the university itself offers various courses, workshops, etc. that are aimed at improving your skills whether that is Excel classes or CV advice sessions. This also comes hand in hand with Sussex being able to provide this positive atmosphere. The moment you step onto campus you feel people interacting and enjoying life, you truly feel like you are part of a strong, diverse community.

The multicultural dimension that presents the opportunity to meet and forge lifelong relationships with amazing personalities from across the world

Why did you want to be a student caller?

This is more than a calling for me. To support initiatives that close the opportunity gap and reduce inequalities in quality educational access. My work as a Non-profit leader in Nigeria, availing learning opportunities for poor children from low-income families enables my thriving support for the ideology behind the Sussex Fund. There is no better way to support this cause other than being a Student Caller myself.

I am doing my PhD which I have just started this year. My PhD project is cross-disciplinary both in the School of English and the School of Media, Film and Music, making it a mix of literature, cultural studies and anthropology.

What do you love about Sussex?

I really like the University of Sussex because it allows me do pursue a project that I never thought to be pursuable before. Because of the interdisciplinary nature of the university, it is possible for me to combine my life-long interest in Malawi and combine this with important questions around postcolonial reading and teaching. Doing fieldwork in Malawi and returning home to the beautiful campus of the University of Sussex with all its student activism, passion for learning and an all-round curiosity inspires me every day!

Why did you want to be a student caller?

I wanted to be a student caller because I think that assembling funds for important causes like the hardship fund are often things we take for granted, especially as students. In participating in this campaign I have the chance to see what goes on behind the curtain so to say, and put myself in the position of actively working towards gaining money for these funds rather than just marvelling at the fact that they are here. I find it a very interesting and rewarding experience thus far, that definitely makes me think differently about some things.

Sussex University and BSMS have been extremely supportive in ensuring that as a first year, straight from school I haven’t felt too out of my depth or overwhelmed. my interests are music, I play guitar and am learning saxophone, love reading and running.

What do you love about Sussex?

what I love about Sussex is the way that it is a place where everyone feels included and valued, and that it balances being a great university with not being too elitist. I think that Sussex is a part of Brighton not just geographically but also in spirit and that it helps support and encourage liberal values and good causes. Sussex is also a very Beautiful university and I love walking around the campus and the surrounding area of the South Downs!

Being a student caller allows me to learn from people who have already graduated from Sussex and see where their degree took them and what they have learnt from their life after Sussex, which is a really great opportunity. Although I have never done work like it before, the ability to find common ground with strangers and to listen to people with your full attention are both skills well worth developing.

What are you studying and which year are you in?

Second Year studying Zoology

What are your interests?

Gardening (Roots Society), LGBT Society, SUDS, musical theatre

What do you love about Sussex?

1) I love Sussex because the university is constantly working towards an inclusive and communal campus. Coming from America, I was scared that I would have trouble making friends or becoming involved on campus, but the Student Union hosts so many free events that I was able to involve myself in multiple societies. The variety of modules at Sussex allow students to study whatever subject they are passionate about, and many seminars contain fewer than twenty students allowing the students and tutors to really get to know one another.

Why did you want to be a student caller?

I wanted to be a student caller because I was shocked at how easily I was able to adjust to this new university in a new country. I have done fundraising prior to this campaign, and know that I enjoy talking with people who I share a common bond with, and with how accepted I feel at Sussex I am happy to talk to past graduates about their time here and the reasons why they love the school. I love that this fund is for students, and gives students opportunities that they may not have otherwise had. Last year, the Roots’ Society was given a grant by the Student Involvement and Opportunities fund, which allowed expansion and growth of the community garden on campus, and I wanted to be a part of the fundraising group that makes many of these grants possible.

What do you love about Sussex?

Sussex goes beyond the academic development of its students to social and professional development. Its diverse student population have access to numerous dinning facilities and bars to socialise in. One can never feel homesick in Sussex because you always have somewhere and someone to socialise with. The Sussex alumni platform has simplified connections between current students and alumni for career development purposes.

Why did you want to be a student caller?

During my final year University while pursuing an undergraduate degree, I almost dropped out due to financial constraints. It was an alum of that particular University who bailed me out that year through the alumni sponsorship fund. Without alumni funding, I wouldn't be in Sussex today pursuing a Masters degree simply because I would have dropped out during my undergrad! My passion to assist the Sussex alumni fund raising team this year was thus derived from that experience.

I believe what the university does and the initiatives and schemes it puts in place are priceless. The Sussex Fund is important and for it to exist, support is necessary. I also could not resist the opportunity to connect with the alumni of the university especially because one day I would hopefully be a part of that community.

What do you love about Sussex?

Sussex has given me an opportunity that most universities were not able to give me. Right from the very onset they have motivated pushed and given me space for growth and self understanding. In terms of understanding students the University is one of the best in being lenient and understanding. Sussex has numerous programs designed to help all type of students from various backgrounds and situations.

Why did you want to be a student caller?

before I got into uni, I was massively scared as to how I was going to begin to fund myself. Being a recipient of aid has benefited me greatly and given me that first push and confidence in knowing that my finances were taken care of during first year; which greatly enabled me to focus on my academics and building relationships around me. I would wish for others to also experience that feeling and would love to be in the process of helping them achieve this

What are you studying and which year are you in?

English. In my Second year

What are your interests?

Reading, history and film. Particularly enjoy early modern history and attending the cinema for new film releases. A housemate of mine is treasurer of the RAG (Raising and Giving) society, so I also support them in various events where they fundraise for amazing charities like Rise, The Rainbow Trust and Great Ormond Street Hospital.

What do you love about Sussex?

I love that Sussex has always been supportive of my studies and instantly made me feel comfortable on campus. The community at Sussex is so diverse and the location is amazing. As someone who didn't think that university was an option, Sussex made sure to inform me off what they could offer me personally. I love the flexibility of degrees here and the countless opportunities Sussex offers their students. Sussex is a value led institution and ensures that anyone, from anywhere can have access to a higher education.

Why did you want to be a student caller?

I wanted to become a student caller in order to help benefit the university I study at. As a First Generation Scholar, I know first hand how helpful the scholarship schemes are here at Sussex. Its diversity, the amount of international students and the mixed of all the cultures that give it different points of view towards every topic. Furthermore the variety of activities, there is societies, sports, talks in the library, reunions and meetings, discussions, there is something for everyone. Finally, the location, it is situated in the beautiful Brighton but not in the very crowded city but in a more reserved area with very pretty landscape

Why did you want to be a student caller?

I wanted to be a student caller because it is a way of supporting Sussex community and help make an even better university for the future. Also, because I had a scholarship that really helped me focus on academics instead of worry about my finances during my first year, and this is my way of returning the favour. As well that I am very proud of studying in this university, I consider it one of the bests overall, l and want to help prove it using my communication skills and my ability to convince others.
